From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

This small town was turned into fictional Cedar Falls, Iowa, over the weekend with more than 1,000 locals volunteering as extras for the filming of “Sleeping With the Enemy,” starring Julia Roberts.

A Fourth of July parade scene in the movie was staged Saturday and included local cheerleaders, clowns, Shriners, military veterans, beauty queens, a high school marching band, the town’s 1947 Seagram fire truck and lots of flag wavers.

The cast and crew of about 100 from 20th Century Fox arrived Friday to begin shooting the movie, which has a February release date.

The film is about a woman--played by Roberts--who eludes her abusive husband by faking her own death and relocating to the tranquil Midwestern town of Cedar Falls.

Kevin Anderson plays Roberts’ husband. Patrick Bergin, who appeared in “Mountains of the Moon,” is the college professor who befriends her.
