NATION : Anti-Abortion Display Targeted

MADISON, Wis. — Vandals destroyed and splattered blood on portions of an anti-abortion display of crosses erected by volunteers in a field off a major highway near Madison.
About 1,500 crosses had been constructed and placed in the field by about 40 people who wanted passing motorists traveling during the Memorial Day weekend to think about why legal abortions should be halted.
Doris Johnson, the field’s owner, said today about 300 crosses had been either pulled up or destroyed and a sign containing anti-abortion messages in the middle of the display had been partially uprooted and splattered with blood.
Johnson was alerted to the vandalism by passing veterans, who were upset with the vandalism because they thought it was a Memorial Day display.
