Pomona : Block Grants Awarded

The City Council has allocated $1.5 million in federal block grants to a variety of housing, neighborhood improvement and community programs and has asked its Community Life Commission to establish priorities for spending another $300,000.

The budget approved by the council includes:

*$683,404 for housing rehabilitation.

*$285,000 for planning and administration.

*$225,271 for curbs and gutters in low-income areas.

*$115,000 to reduce blight by enforcing city codes.

*$69,262 for summer and after-school recreation.

*$40,000 to Pomona Open Door for counseling for students with behavioral and truancy problems.

*$34,469 to the Soledad Enrichment Action program to deal with gang problems.

*$33,942 to the Pomona Valley YMCA to serve children 5 to 14 from low- to moderate-income families.

*$20,000 to the Boys and Girls Club for youth recreation.

*$13,269 to Project Sister for educating junior high school students on date rape.

*$10,000 to the YWCA to serve junior high school girls.
