Signatures Submitted for Term-Limiting Initiative

Supporters of an initiative that would limit the terms of state officeholders and impose a cap on their expenses announced this week that they have submitted nearly 1 million signatures to qualify the measure for the November ballot.

“The whole purpose (of the measure) is to return the Legislature to citizen representation,” retiring County Supervisor Pete Schabarum, one of its sponsors, said at a Los Angeles news conference.

The secretary of state’s office has until June 29 to verify the minimum 600,000 valid signatures needed to qualify the measure, which would limit state senators to two four-year terms and Assembly members to three two-year terms.

Two four-year terms would be the limit for the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, controller, secretary of state, treasurer, superintendent of public instruction and members of the Board of Equalization.
