Two men in a four-wheel-drive truck, fleeing from San Fernando police after shots were fired in a suspected gang attack, crashed broadside into a car in Mission Hills Friday night, killing two occupants and critically injuring a third, Los Angeles police reported.

Both suspects were captured. Their identities were not immediately available.

The incident began when police responded to a report that shots had been fired from a passing vehicle into a party at a house on Larue Street in Los Angeles, near San Fernando High School. It was not immediately clear if anyone at the party was hit by the shots.

A patrolling San Fernando police officer heard the shots, drove to the scene, saw the truck and began the chase westward on Chatsworth Drive.

Just over the Los Angeles city line in Mission Hills, the truck broadsided an auto heading south on Laurel Canyon Boulevard, severely damaging it, LAPD Sgt. Dennis Zine said. The crash occurred about 9 p.m.

A man and a woman, who were not immediately identified, died at the scene. A third occupant of the car was taken to San Fernando Hospital in critical condition, Zine said.

One of the men in the truck tried to flee on foot but was caught, Zine said.

The shots fired at the party were believed to be gang-related, Zine said.

One of the suspects was hospitalized with a head injury, Zine said. The other was in custody at the Foothill Division police station.

Police were seeking a second car, a Cadillac, which was also being chased when the crash occurred.
