Olympians Set to Compete at Irvine Track Meet

Several Olympians and world-class athletes will compete in the Irvine Elite Classic track and field meet Sunday at UC Irvine.

The meet, in its second year, will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the field events. Running events--there will be no race longer than 800 meters--begin with the women’s 100-meter hurdles at 4:30.

Some of the athletes expected to compete include Brazilian 800-meter runner Joaquim Cruz, the gold medalist in the 1984 Olympics; Jamaica’s Grace Jackson, silver medalist in the 200 meters at the Seoul Olympics and U.S. Olympians Stanley Floyd (sprints), Doug Nordquist (high jump), LaTanya Sheffield (hurdles), Ramona Pagel and Bonnie Dasse (shot put), Mike Powell (long jump) and Karin Smith (javelin).

Tickets, which are $10 for adults, $5 for UC Irvine students and children, can be purchased at the gate.
