PRIMARY ELECTION LINEUP

Solidly entrenched Democrats are seeking reelection in every legislative and congressional district on the Westside. Here is a brief recap of Tuesday’s primary election lineup in each district:

CONGRESS

23rd Congressional District:

Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Westwood, Bel-Air, Century City, Beverly Hills, Rancho Park, Palms, northwestern San Fernando Valley.

Incumbent Anthony C. Beilenson of Los Angeles is unopposed on the Democratic side. Republican businessman Jim Salomon, whom Beilenson defeated two years ago, also has no primary opponent. Nor does Peace and Freedom candidate John Honigsfeld.

24th Congressional District

Fairfax area, Hollywood, the edge of downtown Los Angeles, Griffith Park and North Hollywood.

Neither incumbent Democrat Henry A. Waxman of Los Angeles nor Republican John N. Cowles has a primary opponent. Peace and Freedom voters must select between candidates Vikki Murdock and Maggie Phair.

26th Congressional District

Hillside areas above Hollywood, Bel-Air and Beverly Hills, plus the northeastern San Fernando Valley.

Rep. Howard L. Berman (D-Panorama City) faces a nominal primary challenge from Scott M. Gaulke of Studio City, a follower of political extremist Lyndon H. LaRouche Jr.

Two Republicans, Van Nuys businessman Roy Dahlson and Sun Valley hardware manager Gary E. Forsch, are seeking the right to oppose Berman.

Libertarian Bernard Zimring is also on the ballot.

27th Congressional District

Santa Monica, part of West Los Angeles, Mar Vista, Venice, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, part of Inglewood, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Lawndale, part of Torrance and Terminal Island.

Incumbent Mel Levine of Santa Monica has no Democratic primary opponent.

West Los Angeles attorney David Barrett Cohen and Playa del Rey computer salesman Hans Yeager are running in the GOP primary.

Peace and Freedom candidate Edward Ferrer will also run in November.

28th Congressional District

Culver City, Westchester, Lennox, Baldwin Hills, South - Central Los Angeles.

Rep. Julian C. Dixon (D-Los Angeles) is unopposed, as is Republican challenger George Z. Adams, whom Dixon defeated two years ago. Libertarian Bob Weber and Peace and Freedom candidate William R. Williams will also be on the ballot.

ASSEMBLY

43rd Assembly District

Bel-Air, Brentwood, Westwood, Beverly Hills, parts of the northwestern San Fernando Valley.

Incumbent Democrat Terry B. Friedman of Los Angeles has no primary opponent. Neither do any of his challengers, Republican Gary Passi, Libertarian Andrew S. Rotter and Peace and Freedom candidate John Paul Lindblad.

44th Assembly District

Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Venice, Mar Vista, West Los Angeles and Century City.

Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) is being challenged in the primary by Los Angeles businessman Alex Cota, whom he has easily defeated twice before.

Republican Gloria Stout, a Pacific Palisades camera store owner, has run unsuccessfully against Hayden twice before. She is opposed in the primary by Fred Beteta, a retired aerospace associate engineer and longtime member of the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees.

Libertarian Rebecca Donner and Peace and Freedom candidate Timothy Burdick will represent their respective parties in November.

45th Assembly District

Hollywood, West Hollywood, Hancock Park, Universal City, North Hollywood and part of Burbank .

Incumbent Assemblyman Burt Margolin (D-Los Angeles) is unopposed.

On the Republican side, West Hollywood swimming pool contractor Robert K. Davis is running against Hollywood businesswoman Elizabeth Michael.

Peace and Freedom candidate Owen Staley will also be on the ballot in November.

46th Assembly District

Mid-Wilshire area, downtown Los Angeles, Silver Lake, Griffith Park .

Assemblyman Mike Roos (D-Los Angeles) faces primary challenger Sal Genovese, administrator of a private treatment program for alcoholics and drug abusers.

On the Republican side, Los Angeles stockbroker Geoffrey Church and disabled Korean War veteran Howard O. Watts are seeking the nomination.

There also is a contested primary in the Peace and Freedom Party: Dan Robrish versus Robert Taves.

In November, Libertarian Michael Everling also will be on the ballot.

49th Assembly District

Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Westchester, Culver City, Ladera Heights, Baldwin Hills, and the Crenshaw area.

No contested primaries. Assemblywoman Gwen Moore (D-Los Angeles) is seeking a seventh term. The Republican is Eric Givens, whom she easily defeated two years ago. Peace and Freedom candidate Alice Mae Miles and Libertarian Carin Rogers will also be on the ballot.

SENATE

18th Senate District

Malibu, Ventura County and Santa Barbara County.

No contested primary. Incumbent Sen. Gary K. Hart of Santa Barbara is the Democrat. Carey Rogers of Santa Barbara is the Republican. Libertarian Jay C. Wood is also on the ballot.

22nd Senate District

Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Brentwood, Bel-Air, Westwood, West Los Angeles, Century City, Beverly Hills, Mar Vista, the Palms area, and part of Culver City .

Sen. Herschel Rosenthal of Los Angeles is opposed in the Democratic primary by Century City attorney William Graysen.

Republican Michael Schrager and Peace and Freedom candidate Margery Hinds are unopposed in the primary and will face the Democratic winner in November.

28th Senate District

Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Westchester, part of Culver City, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale and part of South-Central Los Angeles.

Sen. Diane E. Watson of Los Angeles has no Democratic opponent. The Republicans did not field a challenger. In November, Watson will face Peace and Freedom candidate Ivan Kasimoff.
