Harrison Young Jr. has resigned as president and chief executive officer of Comarco, which provides engineering and management services to government agencies and defense contractors.

Young, who has been president of the Anaheim company since August, 1988, cited personal reasons for his decision.

He said Comarco is in a good position to deal with the anticipated defense slowdown because of its growing civilian businesses, among them manufacturing roadside emergency call box units.

“There is never a good time to make a decision like this, but I’ve worked on the West Coast for almost three years while my home and family are in Virginia,” he said. “With a profitable fiscal year 1990 behind us, and an excellent start and outlook for fiscal year 1991, I’ve decided it’s time to rejoin my family.”

For the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, the company reported net income of $1.4 million on revenue of $20.9 million, contrasted with a net income of $6.1 million on revenue of $23.6 million for the year before.

Young said he does not have another job yet. He said he will not take a job that would involve competing with Comarco.

Comarco Chairman Gerald D. Griffin said Young helped return the company to profitability and reduce its debt significantly.

“We regret Harry’s decision to leave but fully understand his desire to spend more time with his family,” Griffin said.

Griffin also said the board of directors has begun a nationwide search for Young’s successor. Until that person is found, Griffin said, Don M. Bailey, senior vice president, will fill the president’s role.

Bailey, 44, a Comarco employee for more than 10 years, has served in numerous management positions with the company, most recently as vice president, corporate development.

“With his education and experience, Don is the ideal candidate for this position during the interim period,” Griffin said.
