Cancer Treatment: U.S. Bioscience of Pennsylvania believes that it has developed the first general protection agent against the side effects of chemotherapy. In tests, Ethyol reduced serious complications of ovarian cancer treatment, such as damage to bone marrow and nerves. The firm hopes to prove that Ethyol is effective against side effects of other cancers, as well. The drug may allow doctors to use higher doses of chemotherapy with greater assurance. Philadelphia Inquirer Secret Sales: Despite the easing of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, a Dallas-based electronic spying equipment maker is expected to see double-digit growth in revenue and earnings this year. Two reasons for E-System’s anticipated success are a $2.5-billion backlog of orders and its focus on smaller systems that are less vulnerable to defense cuts. While other companies are laying off workers, E-Systems plans to add 1,000 this year. Dallas Morning News MacPapers: Systems Integrators Inc. of Sacramento has developed software that may give it a foothold in the market for electronically created display advertising for newspapers. The software, called Mac/55, integrates a Macintosh with the SII publishing system, adding a graphics database and storage space for ads, graphics and photos. Sacramento Business Journal
