P.M. BRIEFING : Short-Staff Census Raises Pay

From Times Wire Services

Census workers are getting a raise, some of them at least.

Pay rates will increase between 50 cents and $2 an hour in selected locations across the country, including Los Angeles, where the bureau has had problems attracting staff.

Currently workers are paid between $5 and $8 an hour, depending on local wage rates and staff needs.

While the bureau has sufficient job applicants nationally, shortages exist in areas where few people are out of work and available for such temporary employment.

In those areas, the higher pay is aimed both at recruiting more employees and keeping those already on the job, officials said.

The door-to-door census count is scheduled to continue at least through June 30 and some local follow-up and processing will continue through the end of summer.
