Sang Quang Tran, 16, of Santiago High School in Garden Grove has won the $1,000 first prize in the story round of the Young Artists Competition sponsored by the Santa Ana-based St. Joseph Ballet Company. The story round is the first segment of a three-pronged competition to come up with the story idea, the music and the scenic design for a ballet to be danced by the troupe in spring, 1991. Choreography will be by Beth Burns, the company’s founding artistic director. Tran, who came to the United States from Saigon in 1988, won with a story about a girl caught between a gang and her parents. Three semifinalists, each winning $250, were Liem Duc Nguyen, 15, also from Santiago High School, who wrote about being a boat person from Vietnam; Kevin Mitchell, 19, from Thomas Jefferson High School in south-central Los Angeles, who wrote about four women from different countries coming to the United States and overcoming encounters with racism and sexism by learning to depend upon each other; and Monique Serrano, 15, of Valley High School in Santa Ana, who wrote about mistreated children. The music and the scenic design competitions will be held in the fall.
