Bush to Farmers: Soviet Grain Deal Is ‘Good News’
President Bush, speaking in the heart of the U.S. farm belt today, said the grain agreement sealed at his summit with Mikhail S. Gorbachev last week is “good news” for American farmers.
He said that pact, together with an array of other agreements on arms, trade and other issues, could signal the beginning of the end of the Cold War and the start of a new era of Soviet-American cooperation.
“The new U.S.-Soviet grain agreement signed at the summit calls for at least 40 million metric tons of grain to be purchased by the Soviets over the next five years. That’s nothing but good news for Iowa farmers,” he added, referring to the fact that this Midwestern state is a major grain producer.
