From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Rebels and government troops battled with rockets, mortars and automatic weapons near Monrovia, the capital. President Samuel K. Doe, dug in at his oceanside executive mansion, was reported as telling a U.S. diplomat that the rebels would take the capital only “over my dead body.” The State Department again urged all Americans in Liberia to leave immediately and said U.S. officials had arranged special flights to evacuate them.
