The top 30 floors of the Empire State Building will be lighted with lavender lights in honor of Gay Pride Weekend later this month.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation said today it has lobbied the management of the 102-story-tall building for the last six years to have the landmark building illuminated in honor of their cause.

“Everybody is going to look up that weekend (June 22-24), gay and straight, and they will see that New York City is recognizing the existence of the gay and lesbian community,” said Tom Lynch, a member of GLAAD.

Owners and managers of the building issued a statement on the decision: “We are in total agreement with . . . leaders who seek to end the bigotry and discrimination directed against gay and lesbian New Yorkers. We hope our participating will help end the type of ignorance that breeds this mindless prejudice.”
