Lighting Up U.S.-Mexico Border Area

I find it interesting in reading “1000 Points of Xenophobia” (by Gloria Romero and Antonio Rodriguez, Commentary, May 21) that the authors seem to forget one thing. In 1986 Congress passed the Immigration and Reform Act to stem the flow of illegal aliens in this country. Polls show that most Americans (and that includes Latinos) support tightening up on illegal immigration. Daily the law is broken in mass proportions and people are upset. What complicates this matter is that if American citizens speak up about controlling illegal immigration or curtailing legal immigration they are branded racist and linked to the Ku Klux Klan as this article did. So communication is cut off and tension mounts.

Our country is dealing with major problems, many dealing with uncontrolled growth. Traffic, sewage, health care and landfills are a few. Our schools are completely overloaded to the point where our children have to be in private schools to get a decent education. And most serious of all we have families living in the streets. We are like a sinking ship asked to take in the rest of the world and branded racist xenophobics if we say anything but yes.
