Rowdy fans from the World Cup soccer games fought each other in a train station today, after a series of clashes over the weekend by rock- and bottle-throwing fans left dozens injured.

The fighting occurred as the fans were leaving on trains, and at least 50 people were arrested, reported the Italian news agency ANSA. Their nationalities were not immediately known, but Sunday’s violence broke out between West Germans and Yugoslavs.

There were no immediate reports on injuries in today’s fighting, but newspaper reports said some trains were delayed as much as two hours while police broke up the fighting and made arrests.

Authorities vowed today to tighten security surrounding World Cup soccer matches.

The fighting today followed a clash Sunday before a West German-Yugoslav match that erupted when German fans, hurling rocks, firecrackers and bottles, attacked a group of Yugoslav fans waving their national flag.

The total number of injuries could not be immediately determined, but Italian newspapers reported today that about 30 people were hurt, including fans and passers-by.

The fighting broke out outside the Duomo, Milan’s spire-topped cathedral and city symbol.
