Born Marguerite Keith Chappell on Sept. 26, 1910, in Santa Barbara, she moved to Glendale with her parents in 1912. She studied piano at an early age and her first formal recital at age 14 filled the Glendale Civic Auditorium, her daughter said. She later played the pipe organ at the Mount Olive Methodist Church of Hollywood from 1945 to 1955 and filled in as an organist at the First Congregational Church of Glendale, which she joined in 1914. She was also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society.

After graduating from UCLA in 1932, she was unable to find work as a teacher during the Depression and worked as a sales clerk at Robinson’s until starting with the Glendale Unified School District in the mid-1930s. She married Glenn Berryman in 1941, and divorced him in 1962, the same year she married Ivan Maxwell (Max) Hakes.

The couple moved to Solvang in 1972, where she played the pipe organ at the First Church of Christ, Scientist. She moved to Sepulveda in 1987.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Hakes is survived by her son, John Berryman of Montrose, and three grandchildren. Mr. Hakes preceded her in death.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Pierce Brothers Meyer-Mitchell Mortuary, 5940 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys. A funeral service is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at Pierce Brothers Meyer-Mitchell Mortuary Chapel, which is handling arrangements. Burial will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Park in San Fernando. Donations can be sent in Mrs. Hakes’ name to the Arthritis Foundation, San Fernando Valley branch.
