Robber Surrenders After a 45-Minute Standoff

A man disarmed a security guard at a Westlake check cashing store Tuesday, then blasted away futilely with the guard’s gun at a vault lock as employees hid behind bulletproof glass. The man held police at bay for 45 minutes before giving up, authorities said.

Eddie Artola, 30, was arrested about 5:45 p.m. at the Nix check cashing business in the 1800 block of West 6th Street.

After the guard was robbed of his gun, he managed to run outside and call police, officers said.

Police surrounded the store and used a bullhorn to talk the robber into surrendering.
