President Vaclav Havel, fresh from a decisive election victory, Tuesday announced that he will ask Prime Minister Marian Calfa, a former Communist Party leader, to form the next Czechoslovak government.

A brief statement on the state news agency CTK said Havel designated Calfa after meeting with top leaders of Civic Forum and Public Against Violence, the movements that fought last winter’s revolution and won last weekend’s elections.

The absence of the Christian Democrats from the talks indicated that they might not be included in the government, despite earlier talk of a broad coalition.

Calfa became prime minister during the bargaining that led last December to the formation of a “government of national understanding” dominated by Civic Forum.
