$27,000 to Benefit Homeless

Fraternity House benefited by $27,000, the net proceeds raised at the “Up, Up & Away 1990” brunch hosted by Friends of Fraternity House on May 6 at a private estate in Oceanside. Proceeds will be used for housing homeless people with AIDS. Michael Howard and Cliff Mills were co-chairmen.

* The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation received $90,000 from West Coast Father’s Day Council which held a benefit luncheon May 5 at the Biltmore Hotel. The event as attended by 1,400 guests.

* The Institute for Families of Blind Children received a $220,000 check May 9 from Vistas for the Blind Children Inc., at a ceremony at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. Vistas, a group of 50 South Bay women, annually raises money for blind children in the Los Angeles area. The institute, a private, nonprofit organization, provides research on training doctors in the care and diagnosis of the blind child and is a resource and referral service for visually handicapped children and their families.

* University of Judaism’s spring concert/dinner benefit featuring Russian pianist Vladimir Feltsman was held May 21 in Gindi Auditorium at the University and was attended by 300 guests. The black-tie garden event netted $150,000 to be used for the school’s educational and scholarship programs.

* American Heart Assn.’s second annual Strouds/American Heart Assn. Golf & Tennis Classic was held May 23 at the Industry Hills and Sheraton Resort. Proceeds of $105,278, raised through sponsorships and participation fees from the home textile industry, will fund research and community education programs.

* Variety Children’s Charities hosted a party for more than 1,000 children at the Variety Club Sunshine Coach Rally May 27. Variety donated 14 specially equipped vehicles (seating capacity 12) valued at $250,000 to be distributed to local charities such as Foundation for the Junior Blind, Braille Institute, Foster Youth Connection, The H.E.L.P. Group, Ronald McDonald House and others.

* Los Angeles Mission will receive $5,000 from Westlake Florists’ 10-K run June 3 in Westlake Village. In addition, 108 bags and 10 boxes of clothing and food were donated.
