Hanover Wins Over Toronto for Expo 2000
The West German city of Hanover has won an 18-month campaign to stage World Expo 2000, officials said Thursday.
Jacques Rolland, president of the International Exhibitions Office, told reporters that Hanover received one more vote than Toronto.
The Italian government this week withdrew the candidacy of Venice after a worldwide outcry from art lovers who said it would deal a death blow to the historic canal city.
The four-month fair had been expected to attract 175,000 tourists a day to Venice, which now receives a peak of 60,000 visitors daily.
