L.A. Trade Deficit Shrinks: Los Angeles-based Tradewatch said the first-quarter deficit for goods moving through the Los Angeles Customs District narrowed by 24%. The private trade-tracking concern said imports were $15.6 billion and exports were $10.2 billion. The resulting $5.4-billion deficit was off $1.7 billion from the previous quarter. Japan was the leading importer, sending $5.7 billion in goods through the district. Taiwan was second with $1.8 billion, South Korea third with $1.5 billion. Japan remained the largest buyer of U.S. goods, with shipments of $2.6 billion. South Korea was second with $1.1 billion. Taiwan was third with $838 million.
