The Best Seats

Regarding “Why Does a $30 Ticket Become a $600 Ticket?” (May 27): The answer to the question raised is really quite simple. The $30 ticket becomes a $600 ticket because it was worth $600 to begin with and was originally sold at far below its true market value.

Concertgoers want seats that are close to the stage and afford the best view of the show. Since there are a limited supply of good seats and great demand for them, their market price is bound to be higher than for seats in the back of the arena. This is how our economy works, like it or not. It certainly isn’t “fair,” but nobody ever said life was fair. The same people who can’t afford $600 tickets probably can’t afford expensive automobiles. Does that mean we should shut down all the BMW and Jaguar dealers?

I’m a happy customer of ticket agencies. I like to get the best seats possible and I’m happy to pay a premium to get them. I’d much rather pay the extra money to the artist, but they aren’t offering me that option.
