‘The Swimming Hole’ Stays Put: A 19th-Century masterpiece was bought from one Ft. Worth, Tex., museum by another for $10 million to keep “The Swimming Hole” in the city. After a two-month debate over the possibility of a New York auction for the Thomas Eakins painting, it was purchased by the Amon Carter Museum. The Fort Worth Art Assn., governing body of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, purchased “The Swimming Hole” in 1925 for $700. But officials recently decided to sell the painting because it was unsuited to the Modern Art Museum’s collection of post-1920 European, and post-1940 American art.
