UCLA held its principal commencement ceremony Sunday for the College of Letters and Science. Degrees were conferred on 5,500 graduates with 4,700 receiving bachelor’s and 800 receiving master’s degrees. Roald Z. Sagdeev (Moscow State University, 1955, D.Sc.), Soviet space scientist, physicist and former director of the Institute of Space Research, USSR, delivered the keynote address. From his text:

“We have gathered here at a very important point. We are living in a time when the world is undergoing sweeping changes, which has brought to all of us a new sense of hope. Freedom, democracy, and the right to self-determination: all of this has toppled governments just within the past year. Very few people could have predicted it but many people contributed to it.”

Chancellor Charles E. Young awarded the UCLA Medal, the campus’ highest honor, to: Sagdeev; Anna L. Fisher, NASA astronaut; and to I.M. Pei, architect.
