“The Simpsons” and “Married . . . With Children” gave Fox two shows in the Nielsen top five for the first time ever last week and put the network in third place for Sunday night, bumping NBC to fourth, it was reported today.

“Simpsons” was in third place and “Married” in fourth in the ratings, and with the help of “In Living Color” in 21st place, Fox was the No. 1 network in the 8:30-10 p.m. Eastern time slot.

Prime time on Sunday night extends from 7 to 11 p.m., however, and for that CBS was the winner, ABC second, Fox third and NBC fourth.

While “Simpsons” came in third, NBC’s “The Cosby Show,” against which Fox is pitting “Simpsons” when the new season opens in September, ranked fifth.

Both shows were in reruns, as was ABC’s “America’s Home Videos” in 12th place--which is not chopped liver but also is a comedown for a program that apparently does not perform as strongly in repeats as do sitcoms. “Simpsons” has benefitted from a strong crossover from “Videos” but now is doing better than its rival-network lead-in.

Two prime-time game shows bowed in on ABC last week, but neither was a big winner. “Monopoly” ranked 62nd and “Super Jeopardy” tied for 63rd, but the “Jeopardy” game managed to win its time period and “Monopoly” did not.

“Seinfeld” on NBC was tied for ninth, down from its lead-in, second place “Cheers,” and the network’s other new summer show, “Singer & Sons,” tied for 46th.

The Sunday movie contest went to CBS’s “Red River,” which tied for 31st. ABC’s James Bond theatrical flick, “You Only Live Twice,” tied for 34th, and NBC’s busted pilot, “Appearances,” tied for 61st.

On a night-by-night basis, NBC took Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, CBS was champ on Monday and Sunday and ABC held Friday.
