WORLD : U.S. to Boycott Inauguration of Romanian Iliescu in Protest
The United States will boycott Wednesday’s inauguration of Romanian President Ion Iliescu in a mark of disapproval over last week’s pro-government violence, diplomats said today.
“We received an invitation to send a representative, but neither the United States’ ambassador nor any other American representative will attend,” a U.S. Embassy source said.
Diplomats from other Western embassies said the American action amounted to a strong diplomatic protest against Iliescu’s use of miners last week in a violent crackdown against opposition protests on the streets.
