$520,000 Award OKd in Shooting by Deputies

Los Angeles County supervisors Tuesday approved paying $520,000 to settle a lawsuit filed in the fatal shooting of a Pico Rivera man by sheriff’s deputies during a 1987 family dispute. Pascual Solis, 28, a self-employed contractor, was shot to death after allegedly fighting with deputies called to break up a disturbance at the home of his girlfriend, county lawyers said.

The settlement will be divided among the woman, Sarah Lilian Chavez Donis of Los Angeles; Solis’ estranged wife, Liduvina Reyes of Bakersfield, and his six children, lawyers said.

A county counsel’s report to supervisors recommended the settlement, saying that “should plaintiffs establish liability . . . a jury could return a verdict substantially greater than the proposed settlement.”
