Thieves wielding a sledgehammer broke into the Hudson-Goodman jewelry store inside the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance early Tuesday, removing an estimated $35,000 worth of watches, bracelets and other jewelry from 13 display cases, police said.

Thieves also smashed two outside display cases at the nearby Del Amo Jewelry Mart on Carson Street in Torrance, taking what police described as costume jewelry. Sgt. Ronald Traber said police recovered a sledgehammer outside the Jewelry Mart.

Traber said thieves broke into the fashion center, then smashed a large glass door at Hudson-Goodman and entered the store. The thieves did not enter the Jewelry Mart but instead broke into the two outside display cases containing gold-plated jewelry with artificial stones, Traber said.

Police were alerted to the thefts when a security alarm was activated at Hudson-Goodman at about 3:25 a.m., Traber said.
