Coast Savings Changes Its Name: The Los Angeles-based institution became the latest thrift in California to call itself a bank by changing its name to Coast Federal Bank. Coast also is converting from being a state-chartered thrift to a federal savings bank. Coast, California’s 10th-largest S&L; as of Dec. 31, previously was known as Coast Federal before it converted to a state charter in 1984.
