GARDEN GROVE : Board Acts to Open School Closed in ’80

Reacting to a continued upturn in enrollment, the school board took the first step this week toward reopening an intermediate school closed in 1980.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday to cancel a lease agreement with the Jewish Community Center of Central Orange County for Walton Intermediate School, at 12181 Buaro St. Cancellation of the lease is preliminary to the reopening of Walton for the 1991-92 school year.

“We got 600 new kids this year. We’re getting 600 new kids next year,” said Ronald N. Walter, an associate superintendent. The reopening of Walton would help alleviate crowding in the central and eastern part of the district.

A committee of parents, staff and students had recommended that Walton be reopened with a student body of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students. Additionally, the committee suggested that Doig Intermediate School also change to include grades six through eight.

The change would allow feeder elementary schools to be organized on a kindergarten-through-fifth-grade plan. Walton would draw some students from both Doig and Ralston, another intermediate school.

Under the terms of the lease, the Jewish Center will be asked to move by February.
