An expanded program of live entertainment including rock and jazz concerts, plays and variety shows is being planned for the summer at the 53-year-old Miramar Theater in San Clemente.

The theater, which has mostly featured surf films and occasional rock concerts, changed hands recently. Now under the management of Tustin-based Action Entertainment, the 530-seat Spanish-style hall will stage a “grand opening” with events July 6, 7 and 8.

A July 6 concert will feature Pocket Venus, the Deadbeats and a band to be named. The next day, Beatles copy band Help will play. A variety show is being scheduled for the eighth.

Two “equity waiver” play productions have been scheduled: “Pvt. Wars” by James McClure on Aug. 2 through 5 and 8 through 10, and “Planet of the Mutagens” by Mary Gail Sept. 6 through 9 and 12 through 14. Casts and directors will be announced.

A “surf week” of films, concerts and other events, all to be announced, has been scheduled for Aug. 21 through 26. Meanwhile, the theater will continue to show surf movies and will begin showing art and foreign films as well.

According to Xan Martin of Action Entertainment, the theater has undergone limited renovation and more is planned. The theater underwent extensive restoration in 1986.
