P. M. BRIEFING : GTE Workers Strike in 3 States
More than 3,000 GTE Northwest telephone company workers in three states went on strike today after talks on a new contract broke down, a union official said.
Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers walked off the job shortly after midnight in Washington, Oregon and Northern California, said Douglas Weisner, business manager for Local 89.
The bulk of the more than 3,100 affected GTE workers are in Washington and Oregon. They include telephone cable installers, splicers, operators and clerical workers, Weisner said.
Union and company negotiators met for several hours Thursday but failed to reach an agreement, Weisner said.
The union rejected a three-year offer earlier this week by 72%, he added.
