Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : City Seeks to Heal Trauma of Shooting

Church bells rang throughout downtown Jacksonville, Fla., signaling a time set aside to try to heal the civic trauma caused by a shooting spree that killed 10 people. A memorial service attended by some 600 mourners was conducted by the Rev. B. Fred Woolsey, executive director of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. “This memorial is a release valve for me as well as everyone,” Mayor Tommy Hazouri said after the service. Seven General Motors Acceptance Corp. employees and one customer were shot to death by James Edward Pough during a two-day shooting spree that ended when Pough, 42, shot and killed himself in the GMAC loan office. Pough also had killed a prostitute and her pimp early Sunday, Duval County Sheriff James McMillan said.
