And so, in one part of Washington, President Bush vows to push through a constitutional amendment banning flag burning, without realizing that the freedom to destroy our national symbol is one of the very things that thousands have fought and died in its name to preserve.

And in another part of the capital, the Supreme Court hurls a knife at the heart of the Fourth Amendment by allowing police to randomly stop and question citizens, without probable cause, at so-called drunk-driving “checkpoints” (Part A, June 15). Don’t the honorable justices realize that, no matter how “noble” the reason, they have set a precedent that could set our nation down the path toward a police state?

Doesn’t anybody care that our Constitu Doesn’t anybody care that our Constitution, and with it our country, is slowly being taken away from us?
