KUALA LUMPUR : An Asian Reconciliation
After a 23-year break in bilateral relations, Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas is scheduled to visit Beijing starting Sunday for talks with his Chinese counterpart, Qian Qichen.
Indonesia suspended diplomatic relations with China in 1967 following an abortive, allegedly Communist coup attempt two years earlier. A subsequent purge resulted in the killing of many communists, a large number of whom were ethnic Chinese.
The two sides are expected to announce a timetable and process for normalization of ties following Alatas’ visit.
