The Art of Theft: In a major effort to crack down on art thefts, France has published the first catalogue of art works stolen from its national collections. The catalogue lists 200 works stolen between 1979 and 1989 from museums throughout the country. The authors of the catalogue found that most recent thefts were from museum storage rooms, not exhibit halls, and were probably inside jobs. About 500 copies of the catalogue are being distributed to police, museum and customs officials, art dealers, auctioneers and other experts in a new effort to track down stolen art and crack down on resale on the international market, according to Andre Treps of the Interior Ministry.
