House Panel OKs Cable TV Bill: The House Telecommunications Subcommittee approved a bill that would make it illegal for cable program services such as HBO or CNN to sell themselves only to local cable TV systems. At same time, the bill recognized that exclusive contracts can be a legitimate reason not to sell to new competing TV distribution systems such as direct broadcast satellites. The bill further empowers the Federal Communications Commission to assess when program services engage in anti-competitive practices. The bill heads next to the full House Commerce Committee.
