LOCAL : Passenger Killed in Car Crash

A passenger in a car that skidded out of control and struck a fire hydrant and a utility pole was killed this morning in Sun Valley, Los Angeles police reported.

The identity of the 18-year-old Sepulveda man was not released pending notification of his family.

Officer J. W. Hosford said the victim was a passenger in a car driven by Manuel DeJesus Carcamo, 18, of Burbank. For an unknown reason the car went out of control at 12:45 a.m. at Lankershim Boulevard and Webb Avenue and went up on the curb, where it sheared off a hydrant before striking a utility pole.

Emergency workers had to use power tools to cut through the wreckage and free the men. The passenger was taken to Pacifica of the Valley Hospital in Sun Valley, where he was pronounced dead, and Carcamo was taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was in critical condition.

No charges have been filed in the case and the accident remains under investigation, police said.
