NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Key Environmental Bill Becomes Law

A $3-billion, 10-year program to protect Florida’s natural spaces from rampant development, considered one of the nation’s biggest commitments to the environment, was signed into law by Gov. Bob Martinez. The Preservation 2000 bill authorizes use of $30 million in state funds as seed money to sell $300 million in bonds for the purchase of wetlands, beaches, scenic river areas and forests.
