Tom D’Eath, in the Miss Budweiser, won his first Thunder on the Ohio race with a hydroplane record speed of 140.988 m.p.h. at Evansville, Ind.

The turbine-powered unlimited hydroplanes driven by D’Eath and Chip Hanauer were deadlocked after the first two laps. But coming out of the second turn of the third lap, Hanauer’s boat touched Miss Budweiser’s rooster tail and pitched into the air, allowing D’Eath to open a lead he never lost.
