Thomas Johnson of Sacramento won the 14th annual Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run from Squaw Valley to Auburn, Calif., in 16 hours 38 minutes 52 seconds.

Johnson, 31, took the lead after more than 70 miles from Dave Scott, 32, of Fremont, Calif., after running in third and fourth place for much of the race.

Johnson’s time was 14 minutes slower than Brian Purcell’s course record set in 1988.

Scott finished second in 17:14:23.
