Former Prime Minister Menachem Begin was hospitalized in good condition today after breaking his right hip in a fall at his home, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman, Dvorah Weissman, said Begin was undergoing surgery and added, “He was fully conscious when he came in and was aware of his injury.”

It was the second time the 76-year-old Begin was taken to Shaarei Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem this year. He was admitted with pneumonia on May 16 and released two weeks later.

Begin stepped down as prime minister in September, 1983, without giving a public explanation. He was believed to be depressed about Israel’s military involvement in Lebanon and by his wife Aliza’s death.

Since resigning, Begin has not taken part in public affairs.
