WORLD IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Plan to Kill 30,000 Seals Angers Liberals
A proposal to kill 30,000 seals has white liberal South Africans up in arms. A Taiwan factory paid South Africa about 8 cents per seal for the right to slaughter 25,000 cubs and 5,500 adult bulls off South Africa’s west coast. The meat would be used for dog food, and the bulls’ genitals for aphrodisiacs. The killing is to start July 15. White animal lovers are raising funds and threatening lawsuits to save the seals. Former French film star Brigitte Bardot said she would go to South Africa to prevent the “barbaric massacre.”
