Phoenix Suns team physician Dr. Paul Steingard is being treated at a hospital here for Guillain-Barre syndrome, a neurological disorder that has caused weakness in his arms and legs.

Steingard, 61, was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center on July 1 and was listed in fair condition today.

Dr. Jeffrey Gitt, the physician for Steingard, said Steingard is expected to have a full recovery although it could take weeks or months.

“It’s not so much paralysis,” said Dr. Scott Steingard of his father’s condition. “He can move his arms and legs to some degree, but he doesn’t have the fine control of the arms and legs.”

The elder Steingard has been the Suns’ doctor for most of their 22 NBA seasons. He also is on the staff of the Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics in Phoenix.
