A St. Louis Roman Catholic priest who may have been lost in an inner-city neighborhood was shot to death in his rented car early today, police said.

Father Mario Robert Ross, 49, head of campus ministry at St. Louis University, died shortly after 2 a.m. at the University of Tennessee Medical Center after being shot in the head several times, police spokesman Foster Arnett said.

Ross flew into Knoxville on Thursday to attend a conference on community activism, according to Arnett.

“At some point after dinner, Father Ross, presumably lost, then drove . . . and apparently pulled over to the side of the road,” Arnett said. “As (he) started to pull from the side of the road, some unknown person or persons began to fire shots at him, hitting him multiple times about the head area.”

No arrests had been made.
