Fans enraged by England’s loss to West Germany in World Cup soccer rioted in a night of violence that left three dead, dozens injured and 600 under arrest, police said Thursday.

The rioting broke out Wednesday night after fans watching live a telecast of the semifinal in Italy poured into the streets after West Germany defeated England on penalty kicks, 4-3, after a 1-1 tie through regulation time and two 15-minute overtimes.

More than 35 police officers were injured.

In Brighton, 500 fans roamed the streets, overturning cars with foreign license plates, smashing shop windows and looting. The mob also chased German and French students through the streets.
