From Times Wire Services

Police clashed with youths in the capital and violence spread to three other cities today, the third day of riots fueled by an aborted pro-democracy rally. Police said at least one person was killed.

The death brought to at least four the number of people reported killed since the disturbances began when police used gunfire and tear gas to stop thousands from rallying Saturday.

Protesters tried to rally after the government detained at least 12 pro-democracy activists last week. The U.S. Embassy confirmed today that it had given asylum to one activist who went into hiding.

Today marked the first time the violence spread outside Nairobi. Clashes between demonstrators and police were reported in Nakuru, Muranga and Nyeri, all north of the capital.
