World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : 230 Hurt as Police Break Up Protest

South African police employing tear gas and attack dogs stampeded a crowd of about 1,000 black protesters, injuring at least 230 of them in a township near Pretoria, witnesses and police said. Meanwhile, Minister of Law and Order Adriaan Vlok said nine white extremists were detained in connection with a series of bombings aimed at anti-apartheid targets.
