Motorola Inc. today reported a 4.5% gain in its second quarter profit over a year ago, partly due to international demand for its cellular telephone technology.

The company said net income for the three months ended June 30 totaled $161 million, or $1.22 per share, compared with earnings of $154 million, or $1.18 a share, in 1989.

Sales jumped 14% to $2.7 billion from $2.4 billion.

Chairman George Fisher said lower profits in Motorola’s two-way radio business were more than offset by a recovery in the company’s semiconductor business and rapid growth in cellular telephone markets.

Sales in the company’s general systems sector, which includes cellular telephone products, advanced 44% and orders rose 54%, Motorola said.
